We are heartbroken by the events of the past two weeks, and it is a sharp reminder that racial injustice remains a deeply rooted issue in our world. The senseless killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, along with countless others killed simply because they were Black, must be addressed in the form of real societal change.  We need to stamp out hatred and bigotry and heal the deep divisions in our country.  Crunch will take a meaningful role in leading that change.

Although we're a small company, we recognize the outsized responsibility we have by touching the lives of over 1.5 million members and thousands of team members around the world. We're proud of the diversity of the teams at our gyms, and our history of inclusiveness since 1989.

Crunch supports the rights of people to express the profound pain felt across the country through peaceful demonstration and protest. For too long, our Black colleagues, trainers, staff, and their families have been confronting issues of racism and brutality in a way that a white person cannot fully understand.  But we feel your anger and are listening.  We do not tolerate hate, racism or injustice. For over 30 years, we have committed to creating a space where we love and empower each other and listen with open minds, open hearts, and no judgments. While we are deeply proud of the community we have fostered, it's clear that we can do more.  Let us stand together with the Black community in the pursuit of equality and justice and push for change.

To that end, I am announcing that on behalf of Crunch Fitness we are taking the following steps to address systemic racial injustice in all forms.

First, although we have been substantively closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic since March, we will be making a significant contribution to support the critical work of the Equal Justice Initiative (  The Equal Justice Initiative is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society.  We are proud to support their efforts.

Second, we are taking concrete steps to enhance our inclusive atmosphere in a way that celebrates our diversity and reinforces our philosophy of a No Judgments gym with room for everyone, regardless of shape, size, age, race, gender, or fitness level.  When our gyms reopen, we will establish an Employee Diversity Advisory Board, made up of employees with different racial and ethnic backgrounds from all levels of the Company.  My Leadership Team and I will work directly with this board to develop specific actions to root out bias, promote and recognize the successes and contributions of our diverse employee and member base, and continue towards an inclusive culture that is the very best version of Crunch.  Importantly, this group not only provides an employee voice, but it is an opportunity for our Leadership Team to listen and to learn.  Lastly, we will partner with this group to determine other organizations that we can support financially, contribute our time and mobilize our community to affect long-term and sustainable change for the Black community.

Our work on this issue is not temporary. We are committed to implementing these changes for the long-term and adding to them as we reopen our gyms.  And it is our commitment to our employees, our members, and our communities that we will stand with the Black community to address these issues and become the changes we seek.

With respect,

Jim Rowley
